Ship wake modeling for synthetic aperture radar simulation

چکیده
These paper present a new approach to introduce ship wake in synthetic aperture radar simulation. Usual ship wakes models are based on hydrodynamics studies and give a good description of these phenomena but need important computation time. In our study, we propose an original model which is instigated from Kelvin wakes. The wake description (wave length, direction...) is defined from the ship feature (width, length, speed...). Then, the wake is introduced in the maritime environment and evolves according to the sea surface characteristics and ship direction.

Bistatic Radar Imaging of the Marine Environment - Part II: Simulation and Results Analysis
We present a bistatic, polarimetric and real aperture Marine Radar Simulator (MaRS) producing pseudo-raw radar signal. The simulation takes the main elements of the environment into account (sea temperature, salinity, wind speed). Realistic sea surfaces are generated using a two-scales model on a semi-deterministic basis, so as to be able to incorporate the presence of ship wakes. Then, the rad...
متن کاملApplication of Facet Scattering Model in SAR Imaging of Sea Surface Waves with Kelvin Wake
The principal purpose of this work is the simulation of the ship wake in Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imaging based on a facet scattering model. The hydrodynamic model of the surface waves mainly considers the Kelvin wake waves and the wind driven waves. For the prediction of radar returns from the composite surface, the semi-deterministic facet scattering model (SDFSM) is proposed, which is ...
متن کاملThe Narrow-V Wake
The narrow-V ship wake in a radar image is typically a bright V-shaped or wedge-like return with an angle of a few degrees. It is often seen in images from satellite-borne Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), especially when the ship is traveling in a direction close to the SAR track and when the wind is light. Though explanation for the narrow-V wake exists already, it has been recognized from the ...
متن کاملEstimation of Ship Velocity by Using Sar Imagery - Simulation Methods
The estimation of ship heading and speed from a high resolution Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) image of ship and its wake is important for monitoring and tracking ships. In order to get a correct and focused image of the moving ships, it is necessary to know the real positions and velocities of the ships. Though the ship can often be imaged clearly, its orientation may be difficult to estimate ...
متن کاملSAR Imaging of Ship Wakes and Inverse Ship Wake Problem
Airborne Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images of sea surface often reveal ship wakes, which appear in a form of bright and dark streaks. It is believed that some of them pertain to the ship generated Kelvin wave system and some to the ship turbulent wake (Reed et al., 1990). The streaks in SAR images are sufficiently narrow to consider them as straight segments. Assuming that the location and ...
